SADKO LEGEND

he name Sadko was a name of Novgorod merchant and gusli player, which had become famous in Russia and abroad due to the Rimsky-Korsakov opera "Sadko". This opera had been played on many stages in different countries. The legend about Sadko came out in ÕII-ÕIII century, when Novgorod was an independent trade city. Rich merchant Sadko equipped ships and went to trade to the far foreign countries. He had traveled during twelve years, until once his ships stopped in the middle of the sea. Sailors understood, that the Sea King wanted a victim. The lot had fallen on Sadko. Then he pulled gusli strings, and the water gave him way. Sadko went down to the sea bottom to see the Sea King. The Sea King had asked Sadko to play gusli and sing for him. All his kingdom went dancing alone with the beautiful music. The Sea King liked music so much, that offered Sadko to stay in his kingdom and marry his daughter princess Volkhva, which fall in love with him. But Sadko was married, and his wife Lubava was faithfully waiting for him during many years. An athlete had released Sadko from the Sea Kingdom and returned him back to the earth to his beloved wife Lubava. And Sea King daughter Volkhva had turned into the river Volkhva, right besides Novgorod. And even now the Great Novgorod is staying upon the Volkhva river...
